Transportation in SURINAME

Along the coastal areas, the road system ensures good access by cars (don’t forget that Suriname drives on the left) as well as buses for tourists. Taxis are plentiful in Paramaribo and the main towns. Most visits to the interior include a flight in a light aircraft, although many trips will often include a final stage in a local dug-out canoe. These river boats are the main form of transport in the interior, other than on foot.
Suriname has an extensive network of some 50 airstrips throughout the country served by local air charter companies. These air operators who also provide charters to the region include:

English is widely spoken, while local people prefer Sranan Tongo and their own ethnic languages such as Sarnami (a Surinamese variation of Hindi), Javanese, Chinese, Portuguese, the Lebanese version of Arabic, Spanish as well!!!and several different Amerindian and Maroon languages.

Currency:::

The local currency is the Surinamese Dollar SRD, and money exchange facilities are readily available in Paramaribo and the district towns. For the latest on exchange rates:

Weather in Suriname~

Typically of the tropics, Suriname enjoys generous amounts of warm weather cooled by ocean breezes for most of the year.
Suriname is outside of the hurricane belt and characterized by two dry seasons and two rainy seasons:

* Short dry season February—April;
* Long rainy season May—Mid August;
* Long dry season Mid August—November, and
* Short rainy season December—January.

Even in the rainy seasons the sun soon comes out again.

VISAS:::

At this time, many tourists from outside of CARI-COM require visas. These can only be provided at the airport if organized in advance by a local tour operator or contact. Alternatively they may be obtained from a Suriname diplomatic mission. Please check for the latest requirements at www.surinameembassy.org
